When building a custom estate or commercial facility in the Virginia Highlands, the driveway material is a major decision. While concrete has its place, asphalt is overwhelmingly the superior choice for the Blue Ridge climate.
Flexibility is Survival
Concrete is rigid. When the ground freezes and heaves in Roanoke or Charlottesville, concrete snaps and cracks. Asphalt, especially polymer-modified mixes, is naturally flexible. It bends and flexes with the freeze-thaw cycles of the Appalachian terrain, surviving where concrete shatters.
Melting Snow and Ice
The deep black color of asphalt acts as a natural solar sink. In the winter, asphalt absorbs the sun's UV rays, melting snow and ice significantly faster than light-colored concrete. For long, winding rural driveways, this natural melting capability is a lifesaver.
Cost-Effective Maintenance
When concrete fails, you have to jackhammer and remove massive slabs. When asphalt begins to age, it can be easily crack-filled, sealcoated, or overlaid at a fraction of the cost, extending its life indefinitely.
